The Staley Mustangs 7th Grade Football Blue Team and the Griffin Gators played a great game tonight. Both teams played hard and played tough. The game could have been won by either team. The Mustangs had their work cut out for them as Griffin ran the ball in for a touchdown on their first play from scrimmage, taking an early 7-0 lead. The Gators then shut the Mustangs down and force them to punt. The Gators then steadily drove down the field and scored again 3 and half minutes into the second quarter. The Gators had a 14-0 lead over the Mustangs. The Mustang offense finally got it going, and had several players, #20, #21 and #32 carrying the ball down the field. Staley's #20 cut the near sideline after a handoff and ran to the corner of the end zone for the touchdown. The PAT was good and the score stood at 14-7 in favor or the Gators.
The second half started out with the Mustangs fumbling the ball to the Gators. The Staley defense showed what a powerhouse they can be, as they shoved the Gators back and back until they were facing 4th and a very long way to go. After getting the ball back, the Mustangs, unfortunately, could not generate any offense and had to punt the ball away. The start of the fourth quarter had the score still at the Gators 14 and Mustangs 7. The Mustangs defense held the Huskies, so the Mustangs got the ball. A pass interference call on fourth down gave the Mustangs new life and a new set of downs. Mustangs #20 ran the ball down the near side of the field gaining several yards. Number #21 ran the ball on two more plays getting the Mustangs insides the ten yard line, however on the next play the Mustangs fumbled and the Gators recovered. After a nice run by the Gator running back, the Staley defense buckled down, they ran the quarterback around the back field causing a fumble, and the Mustangs recovered. The Mustangs threw an incomplete pass on first down, but then #21 ran the ball down twenty yards to inside the five yard line for a first down. The Mustangs scored on the next play, bringing the score to: Gators 14- Mustangs 13. The Staley boys lined up for the PAT, handed the ball off and ran it straight up the middle. Unfortunately, they were stopped about a yard short. The Griffin Gators made a huge play and held on to the lead with 1:22 left in the game. The Gators got the ball, made a first down, then ran out the clock to preserve the win over the Mustangs. The Staley boys played a great game, coming back after being 14 points down early on. The Mustangs held the Gators from scoring for two and half quarters. Unfortunately, a few errors proved to be costly. However, the Staley boys played with Mustang spirit and determination. I a suuper proud of them. Great job, Mustangs!! Hold your head high!!
