The Staley Mustangs 7th Grade Football White Team played the Griffin Gators tonight. The Mustangs and Gators both played a great game, keeping it close throughout the contest. The Mustangs kicked off to the Gators and the Staley defense stopped the Gators before they made a first down. The Mustangs had a nice drive down the field to the ten yard line but could not punch it into the end zone and turned it over on downs to the Gators. The Mustang defense did their job, stopping the run and sacking the quarterback, forcing the Gators to punt. Staley started off with great field position, and the Mustang running game did the rest. Numbers 44 and 25 marched Staley to the red zone, with #25 taking it in for the score. The PAT kick was short, but the Mustangs had the lead 6-0 with 2:12 left in the half. The Gators turned right around and scored when the quarterback ran it 35 yards on a keeper. The PAT missed and the score was tied at six with 1:37 left in the half. The Mustangs tried to score again, with #44 leading the running game and a completed pass from #10 to #22. However, time ran out before the Mustangs could get down into scoring position.
The Mustangs got the ball at the start of the second half, but could not get to the end zone. The Gators got the ball and the Staley defense proved how tough they are, they pressured the quarterback, chasing him in the backfield, and he fumbled the ball while being tackled. Staley's #75 recovered for the Mustangs. The Mustang offense took a couple of plays before #44 took the ball the final three yards for another Mustangs score. The PAT run was good and Staley had the lead 13-6. Griffin answered quickly when one of their receivers caught the ball and ran down the field for 50 yards, all the way down to the three yard line. Griffin put six on the board, but the PAT was no good, leaving the Mustangs with a slim 13-12 lead at the start of the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs were going down the field when the ball was fumbled and Griffin recovered. Things evened out as the Mustangs #22 intercepted the ball. Staley scored a touch down, but it was called back on a holding penalty. Bad luck followed as the Mustangs fumble the ball away and the Gators recovered. The Staley defensed played awesome, they drove the Gators back play after play, putting pressure on the quarterback. The Gators faced 4th and a bus ride, as the Staley defense pressured the quarterback again, chasing him in the back field, and dropping him for another loss. The Mustangs took over on downs inside the ten yard line. One play later, #48 took it in for another six. The Staley kicker #17 put it through the uprights, giving the Mustangs a total of 21 points to the Gators 12 with a minute and a half left to play. The Mustangs shut down the Gators offense one last time to take home the win 21-12. A great job by the Mustangs!! The 7th Grade Football White Team is still undefeated with a 4-0 record. Awesome!!
