The Staley Mustangs 8th Grade Football White Team played a great game against the Griffin Gators on this beautiful fall night. The Mustangs kicked off to the Gators who soon fumbled and the Mustangs recovered. On the Mustangs' first offensive play, running back #27 took the hand off, turned the corner and scampered 40 yards for the touchdown. The PAT kick was good and the Mustangs led 8-0. The Gators and Mustangs were battling it out. The Mustang defense played well, making the Gators work really hard for the smallest gain on yardage. At the start of the second quarter, a Gator running back broke free and ran into the end zone. Their PAT kick was good and the score was tied at 8 all. The Mustangs offense went to work. They took the kick off to right around mid field. Mustang #1 got around the defense and ran down the far sideline headed to the end zone. He almost made it. He was tackled inside the ten yard line. Number 25 carried the ball and got the Mustangs a little closer. On second down, #27 took the ball headed to the far side line and made it to the end zone for a Mustang touchdown. the PAT kick was good and the Mustangs were back in the lead 16-8 with four and half minutes left in the half. The Mustangs held the Gators and took over on downs. The Mustangs running back #27 took the ball to the end zone, but it was called back due to a penalty. The Mustangs were backed up with quite a few yards to go for a first down, a touch down and time was running out in the half. The Mustang quarterback #6 threw a pass to #1 who caught it and ran it toward the end zone, but was caught from behind and taken down at the one and half yard line as time ran out in the half. The Mustangs took the 16-8 lead to the break.
The Mustangs received the ball in the second half and were driving down the field looking to score, when a fumble in the back field lost them about five yards, so they were facing third and fifteen. The Mustangs handed the ball of to the running back, who was making his way to a first down when he was tackled, unfortunately the ball came out and the Gators recovered on the ten yard line. The Gators put together a drive and on third down and five, their running back took the hand off, broke some tackles and ran it forty yards for a touchdown. The PAT kick was short and the Mustangs retained a slim lead 16-14 with 3:24 left in the game. The Mustangs put together a drive toward that got them a first down, that allowed them to run out the clock and preserve the win. Mustangs 16-Gators 14. The Mustang played strong and determined. Way to go Mustangs!!
