The Staley Mustangs 8th Grade Football Blue Team showed the Staley fans what they were made of last night in their game against the Scoggins Seahawks.  The night started off pretty good for the Mustangs as they held the Seahawks on their first possession and got excellent field position when the Seahawks failed to convert.   The Mustangs ran one play, handing the ball off to #21 who ran it in for the score.  However, a penalty had the Mustang backed up to do it again.  Number 21 took the hand off and made it down to the one yard line before being pushed out of bounds.  Number 42 crashed his way up the middle for the touchdown.  A great kick by #41 had the Mustangs with the 8-0 lead early on.  The Seahawks had a couple of runs and two caught passes to have them some points on the board.  The score was all tied up at 8 with 30 second left in the quarter. The Mustangs were not able to do anything on their next series, and the Seahawks got the ball.  The defense proved to be tough as always, forcing a punt.  However, the punt was mishandled and the Seahawks covered the ball to get possession.  The Mustang defense held the Seahawks once again.  The Mustangs #21 brought the ball down the field, setting the Mustangs up for a score.  Number 11 took a hand off and ran it in for a touchdown, only to have it called back due to a penalty.  The Mustangs got the ball inside the 5 yard line, but were backed up again due to a penalty. First and ten at the fifteen yard line was now second  and thirty five from the forty yard line.   The Mustangs tried, but could not convert and punted the ball to the Seahawks.  The Mustangs downed the ball inside the ten yard line.  The Mustangs defense shut down the Seahawks to close out the half with the scored tied at 8.

The Mustangs came out in the second half looking good. The Mustang offense moved down the field, a long run by #21 brought the Mustangs inside the 5 yard line ready to score.  Staley's #42 ran it straight up the middle for the score. A successful PAT had the Mustangs up 16-8 two minutes into the second half.  The Seahawks would not give up.  They ran the kick off back for a touchdown, but luckily for the  Mustangs, it was called back due to a penalty.  The Mustangs stellar defense shut them down, and the Mustangs took over.  The Seahawks defense toughed up and held the Mustangs, forcing them to punt.  A roughing the kicker penalty called on the Seahawks, gave the Mustangs new life.   Fifteen yards and an automatic first down gave the Mustangs the jump start they needed for their next score.  Staley's #21 ran the ball in for a touchdown, but it was called back due to a penalty.  On the next play, the ball was fumbled and the Seahawks recovered.  The Mustang defense stayed strong and the Seahawks did not get near the end zone.  The Mustangs took over and quickly scored when #21 ran the thirty yards to the end zone.  The PAT kick was blocked; however, the Mustangs had a 22-8 lead over the Seahawks with just over two and half minutes left in the game.  The Seahawks were making every effort to get the ball down the field quickly to get a score.  They were mixing it up with both passing and running the ball, keeping the Staley defense on its toes.   With under a minute left, the Seahawks passed the ball and it was caught inside the ten yard line, with the receiver looking to score.  A fantastic tackle by Mustang #80 had the receiver fumbling the ball on the one yard line, and the Mustangs recovering the ball in the end zone for a touch back: Mustangs ball on the 20 yard line.  The Mustangs kneed the ball to run out the clock, preserving a hard fought 22-8 victory.

The Mustangs faced adversity in this game, some miscues and a tough opponent tested their strength, and determination.  The Mustangs proved to themselves that they are a strong team, showing grit and character as they fought hard to work together as a team to overcome the challenges and get the victory.  Congratulations on a well deserved win, Mustangs!!
