The Staley Mustangs 8th Grade Football Blue Team fought hard against the Killian Mustangs last night. The Killian Mustangs stopped Staley on their opening drive and forced them to punt. Killian was able to score on their opening drive, using a strong running game, making the score 7-0. The Staley Mustangs got the ball back and had #17 and #7 sharing quarterbacking duties. A pass from #17 to #9 bought the Mustangs a fresh set of downs, however on the next play, the ball was stripped and Killian took it back 15 yards in the other direction. The defense lined up against the Killian squad at the 20 yard line. On second down, #74 broke through the line and tackled the quarterback for a loss. The defense buckeled down and made some good tackles. However, the defense was unable to stop the ground attack and the Killian running back got over the goal line when he was tackled at the one yard line. The Killian Mustangs had a 14-0 lead.
The Staley Mustang team, already depleted due to injuries, had two players knocked out of the game due to injuries. Number 1, a key component of the running game, and #74 a pillar on defense were sidelined.
Killian started the second half with a good run back off the kick off. They steadily worked down field to go up 20-0, after an incomplete pass on a two point conversion. The Staley defense stayed tough and held the Killian squad for the remainder of the game.
The Staley Mustangs had a hard time on offense with several key players out with injuries. It was a regular triage on the sideline, when #17 came out of the game near the middle of the 4th quarter. The Staley Mustangs showed heart and grit as several players, stepped up and were playing in unfamiliar positions. Stay strong Mustangs!!
