The Staley Mustangs 8th Grade Football Blue Team hosted the Spartans last night.  It proved to be a tough game for the Mustangs.  The Spartans took the opening kick off and marched down the field for an early lead.  Things started off well for the Mustangs as they responded with their own touchdown three minutes later.  The touchdown came after strong runs by #1 Nate and #5. The PAT was unsuccessful, so the Spartans had the lead 8-6.

On the Spartans first down, they handed off to their running back #22, who broke numerous tackles to take it about 50 yards down the field for a touchdown.  The Spartans lead 16-6.

The Spartans defense held the Mustangs and they went three and out. The Spartans handed off to another running back who dodged defenders to run down the sideline, before a sliding, touchdown saving tackle by #1 took him down on the ten yard line.  The Spartans eventually cross the goal line, a missed PAT made the game 22-6.

The Mustangs looked like they were ready to make a game of it, when #5 took the hand off and sped down the field for a 50 yard touchdown.  The Mustangs  missed the PAT, so the scored was 22-12.

The Spartans ran away with the game from there, scoring twice more before the half.  Making the score 38-12 at the break.  The Spartans defense stripped the ball from the Mustangs receiver on the kick off and returned it for a touchdown.  Increasing the score 46-12. A big hit on the Mustang quarterback in next series resulted in a fumble for the Mustangs, which the Spartans recovered.  The Spartans scored two plays later, and kicked the ball through the uprights for a 54-12 score.

The Mustangs put together a nice series with good runs from #22, #19 and #5.  Mustangs running back #5 scored for the third time, as he scampered into the end zone on a 20 yard touchdown run.  A hand off to #5, who ran it straight into the end zone for the PAT, made the score 54-19.

The Mustangs, who already has a couple players out of the line up due to injury, had two more players taken out during the game.  Our kicker was run into on a PAT, and  #1 suffered an injury to his hand on a defensive play.   The Mustangs had a tough night containing the Spartan offense.

Hopefully the Mustangs can field a healthy team and come back strong next week against Griffin.  Go Mustangs!!
