Staley Mustangs 7th Grade Football Blue Team vs. Hunt Huskies

The Staley Mustangs 7th Grade Blue Team officially opened up their season last night against the Hunt Huskies.  The Mustangs received the opening kick off, had their running game going strong when a fumble killed their first drive. The Huskies put together a good drive that ate up quite a bit of time on the clock.  The Mustang defense was tough and Hunt came away with a field goal.  Hunt led by a 3-0 score with two minutes left in the first half. The Mustangs took the kick off and started out on their own twenty.  A few plays in to the series, the Mustangs had the ball stripped away and the Huskies had possession.   The Mustangs defense, once again proved to be tough and the Huskies kicked a field goal to end the first half with the lead 6-0.

The second half had the Mustangs kicking off to the Hunt Huskies.  The Mustang defense dominated the series.   They dropped the Huskies for big losses on two consecutive plays, forcing them to punt the ball away.  The Mustangs had a couple of good runs, but were also plagued by the yellow flag on several occasions.  Finally, after second and long, due to a penalty, the Mustangs generated two good runs to get a much needed first down.  The next play had the quarterback passing the ball out to # 20, who made the catch at the 33 yard line and ran the ball into the end zone, untouched.  The Mustangs had tied the game 6-6.  A hand off to #32 had him coming around to the near sideline to go into the end zone for the PAT, or so the Staley fans thought.  The cheering soon turned to groans, as the yellow flag showed a penalty on the play.  The penalty was holding on the Mustangs.  Ten yard penalty, replay the down.  Not to worry, quarterback #2 threw a short pass out to #21, who made the catch, avoided some tackles and made it into the end zone.  The Mustangs had taken the lead 7-6 with two and half minutes left in the third quarter.  Unfortunately, our quarterback paid the price with a huge hit, side lining him for the rest of the game.  A 15 yard roughing the passer penalty was assessed on the kick off.  The Staley defense was strong and held the Huskies once again, the Mustangs got the ball back as Hunt turned it over on downs. It looked like Staley was going to get a first down, but a penalty had us backing up and punting the ball away.   After receiving the punt, the Huskies started out on their own 30 yard line, they started passing the ball.  A couple of completions and first downs later, they were marching toward the end zone.  They had already proven they had a strong and proficient field goal kicker, as he had no problem with the previous two that gave them the six points.  The Staley and Hunt fans were on the edge of their seats.  Facing third and six, the Huskies once again converted and had a first down on the 30 yard line with about a minute left in the game.  With the passing game going so well for the Huskies, their quarterback put one in the air to the far side line.  Luck was not on the Huskies side as Staley's #53 intercepted the ball ending the Huskies's chances of a win. Mustangs ball with 42 seconds left in the game.  The Mustangs took a knee on two plays to run out the clock and preserve a win.

The Mustangs played an exciting game.  When push came to shove, they played tough, scoring a much needed touchdown, overcoming  penalties, one to get the crucial PAT for the lead, and putting the pressure on to cause turnovers.  These 7th grade Mustangs played a great game, and will continue to improve as the season goes on.  I am looking forward to seeing them all season long.  Great job, Mustangs!!
